Menifee & Riverside County Clay Tiles

Clay tile is more brittle than concrete, so on clay roofs around Menifee we walk and work it with care to keep from breaking tiles.

How We Do It

Repairs and lift and relay on clay tile roofs

Like concrete tile, a clay roof usually fails at the underlayment and flashings long before the tile wears out. We lift the tile, fix what's underneath, and set the tile back.

Call us about your clay tile roof and we'll come take a look.

What The Job Involves

  1. Replacing broken clay tiles

  2. Lift and relay with new underlayment

  3. Flashing repairs

Signs To Watch For

When A Clay Roof Needs Work

  1. Broken Or Slipped Tiles

Clay breaks under a careless foot or a hard knock, and a broken tile leaves the underlayment open. Replace it before water finds the gap.

  2. Stains On The Ceiling

A water stain inside often means the underlayment under the tile has worn through, even when the clay looks fine from the street.

  3. Worn Flashing

Where the roof meets a wall, a chimney or a vent, the flashing does the work. Once it corrodes or pulls loose, water runs in behind the tile.

Permits & Title 24

Clay Tile And The Permit

In Hemet, a tile roof generally can't be covered over: the city's re-roof handout requires a full tear-off where the existing roof is clay or cement tile, with a few exceptions it lists. A lift and relay takes the tile off anyway, and sets it back once the underlayment is new.

In Menifee, every re-roof needs a building permit before work starts, and in Canyon Lake clay tile is on the Property Owners Association's list of allowed roof coverings.

Questions

Clay Tiles Questions

  1. Can you replace just the broken clay tiles?

Yes. Replacing broken clay tiles is part of our clay tile work, along with lift and relay and flashing repairs.

  2. Why does clay tile take more care?

Clay is more brittle than concrete tile. We walk it and work it with care, so fixing one part of the roof doesn't break tiles in another.

  3. Does a leaking clay roof need new underlayment?

Usually. A clay roof tends to fail at the underlayment and flashings long before the tile wears out. We lift the tile, fix what's underneath, and set the tile back.
