Menifee & Riverside County Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingle is one of the most common roofs on Southern California homes, in Menifee and the cities around it.

How We Do It

Tear-offs and re-roofs in architectural shingle

A shingle re-roof starts with a tear-off. We take the old roof down to the deck, replace any boards that are soft or rotted, and lay new underlayment. Then the shingles go on with new flashing, vents and ridge cap.

The two jobs on this page used GAF Timberline HDZ and CertainTeed shingles. You can see the bundles and the underlayment in the photos.

What The Job Involves

  1. Tear-off down to the deck

  2. Replacing soft or rotted decking

  3. New underlayment

  4. Shingles, flashing, vents and ridge cap

Signs To Watch For

When A Shingle Roof Needs Work

  1. Granules In The Gutters

Shingles are coated in mineral granules that shield them from the sun. An aging roof sheds them, so the gutters fill with grit while the shingles wear bare.

  2. Curled Or Cracked Shingles

Shingles that curl at the edges or crack across have dried out. Wind gets under them, and water follows.

  3. Missing Shingles

A shingle blown off in a storm leaves the underlayment open to sun and rain. Replace it before the next rain finds the gap.

Permits & Title 24

Shingles And The Cool Roof Rule

In Climate Zone 10, which covers Menifee and the cities around it, a shingle re-roof that replaces more than half the roof must use shingles rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council, with an aged solar reflectance of at least 0.20 and a thermal emittance of at least 0.75, or an SRI of at least 16.

An unrated shingle is assumed to reflect just 0.08, so it can't meet that on its own. The rule doesn't apply when an exception does, such as R-38 ceiling insulation, a qualifying radiant barrier in the attic, or no ducts in the attic.

  1. Do new shingles have to be a cool roof?

When more than half the roof is replaced in Climate Zone 10, yes, unless an exception applies. The shingles need a Cool Roof Rating Council rating with an aged solar reflectance of at least 0.20 and a thermal emittance of at least 0.75, or an SRI of at least 16.

  2. Do you tear off the old shingles?

Yes. A shingle re-roof starts with a tear-off down to the deck, so we can see the deck and replace any soft or rotted boards before the new underlayment and shingles go on.

  3. Which shingles do you use?

The two shingle jobs on this site used GAF Timberline HDZ and CertainTeed shingles. Tell us what you have in mind when we quote your roof.
